building geography

April 1, 2011

I saw Tad Gloecker speak in Denver last month and I sat with rapt interest as he had built a project layer by layer physically and metaphorically. This table is a built landscape that is “deployed” into a Tea ritual.  A tea set is built into the landscape and at some point a beautifully descriptive handbook folds out for further explaination…..A movie needs to be made of this. Read Gloecker’s description of the work.

This project conceptually unites spectacular geology of black diabase dikes at Schoodic Peninsula with historical traditions of serving tea and popovers at near-by Mount Desert Island. The product (a tea table) was informed by landscape, and conveys a conceptual message about our relationship to nature as well.
