bio building

May 6, 2011

I am interested in new materials but not fashion.  This work by St Martins professor Suzanne Lee has endless potential for decorative objects, my mind is spinning.  Lee concocts a bacteria that will form a fabric and farms it accordingly.  She has many layers of upstream and downstream atributes; but for me it brings to mind the premise of the Lauren Ulrich book Age of the Homespun that early American virtue hinged on the ability to make fabric from scratch/from seed.  Time to bring this idea back? See her TED conference talk-for some reason I can not link it right now.
