history building

June 9, 2011

What I am looking for this week is a collision of the “hand” and technology in contemporary work-not one side or the other.  The industry as the enemy condition was worked through early in the 19th century by the likes of William Morris and Dante Gabriel Rossetti. Pictured is a drawing of a proposed sofa by Rossetti to be fabricated by Morris.  The drawing is interesting because it seems to chart how this idea could be made….Rossetti thinking through the possible manufacturing conditions either by hand or with avaliable technology.  A designer’s process.
