building will

June 23, 2011

It’s hard to be a modernist in Mississippi. And that’s why when small outburst occurs here in Starkville I want to shout it from the roof tops!  In of all places, the MSU athletic center is a wonderful storm of good client and young innovative thinking.Last summer assistant director Patric Nordin arranged a commission for a class of Architecture students of Ernest Ng to design and build a desk for the reception. Using some left over gym flooring the students composed a beautiful functional piece. Next came a simple coffee table design and made by Will Randolph a uber student here at the college. And finally, this summer the design/build studio of Jenny Kivett produced the epic student lounge that now serves as a soaring inspiration to make the gym part of your life-since I do prefer to hangout in good architecture rather than the anemic hallways of most institutional buildings. Such good work, guys keep me up to date as the Sanderson becomes the contemporary architecture mecca for Starkville.
