object building

December 28, 2011

From Tami Wedekind

The work of Anna Sew Hoy first came to my attention back in 2007 at the Hammer Museums “Eden’s Edge” (fifteen LA artists) exhibit.  I was immediately drawn to her work.  Explorations of hand-built clay and assemblage with fabric are crafty with an edge.  They remind me of Eva Hesse – but witty, Claes Oldenburg but with  a textural depth, Mike Kelley in its study of our relation to everyday objects but with hers you want to crawl inside instead of run away.
