building purification

March 14, 2012

From Tami

Motoi Yamamoto creates large-scale sculptures, out of salt, an element in the Shinto tradition that symbolizes purification.  This piece ‘Forest of Beyond” at the  Hakone Open Air Museum  installed for the 1-year anniversary of the Tohoku earthquake and tsunami.  On March 11 attendees were asked to take the salt with them and return it to the sea, thereby completing the cycle.
