building edges

From Tami

Olivia Valentine has received The 2012 Brandford/Elliott Award for excellence in Fiber Art.  She uses lace making to “explore the boundaries between interior and exterior space.   Because lace is often used as an edging, she sees it as representing a mediating space between the private and the public.” The choice of black fibers feels to me as if she’s building shadows.  Lurking in the shadows of architecture, craft and textiles.

From this series her work reminds me of the sheer stairways of Do Ho Suh: both kind of like Wendy sewing the shadows onto Peter Pan—there but nowhere. Really interesting and beautiful in both cases (or all three)
