Mickalena Thomas show at the Brooklyn Museum was not on my radar but I really came away from it inspired. The huge canvases are very well crafted with layers of EVERY medium including signature rhinestones on plywood. It sets up a tremendous game of wondering why oil paint next to enamel next to rhinestones, whats the story here? My favorite work in the show are not the provocative images but the rooms and images derived from a 1970 volume of The Practical Guide of Good Decorating and Home Improvement that Thomas found. These collages are really about space.
