building order and chaos
An odd visual theme developed in Paris, the tale of meat. First illustrated in the voluptuous paintings of Chaim Soutine on exhibit at the Musee de L’Orangerie. His paintings of meat are as soaring as his paintings of gladiolas. Later, we saw the textile sculptures of Tamara Kostianovsky. Large hangers of flesh tidily presented in cloth. It made me wonder is fabric work the new painting? There seems to be a funny need to do representational work with fabric and it seems to have the same urgency and passion as a turn of the century modernist painter.
