thinking through making

February 22, 2013

My visit to MOMA garnered some interesting insights. With every significant modernism show at MOMA for the last ten years; out of the corner of my eye the work of Sophie Taeuber Arp has been an inspiration.  From the Dada heads to her delightful puppets, her work is clear and pure. In the recent epic show of Inventing Abstraction, her work again is crystalline. On view are a few needlepoint pieces with a provactive statement that the needlepoint studies are attempts at color experimentation without the pretense of painting….well yes, that is probably why many people turn to decorative craft a way to see rather than express.

me too. That’s exactly where i get hung up with ‘art’: pretense. Perhaps my confusion / love / hate is something that makes my life interesting. I do love modernism and abstract expressionism, oddly.
