An astounding building

March 9, 2013

Caleb and I went to a preview of the Henri Labrouste exhibition at MOMA this week. A very handsome show that really reinvents the idea of modernism at MOMA.  It made me more fascinated with Paris in the early 19th century through the Napoleonic era. What must have been like to have these huge commissions Bibliotheque National for Labrouste and the Opera House for Garnier during the tenuous political period of that time-Les Mis Architectural.  The drawings in the show are of course amazing but for me the Anatole de Baudot model of a project for a public great public hall had such resonance; a model to explain space and structure, a model to astound. Are architects interested in being in a space like these men?
