library building

April 5, 2013

Last night I went to hear Robin Standefer and Steven Alesch of Roman and Williams speak at FIT as recipients of the Laurence Israel prize that is awarded by FIT every year. The wonderful succinct talk by Standefer was insightful and inspiring for students and the question and answer period when Steven Alesch was asked what the best advise is to young designers:  he explained that his 10 years in film made and the many, many people he met made for a nurturing client base. The recent book was on sale and I picked up a copy. The book is as sumptuous as the work and all the projects look inviting if one went out at night, I don’t. The one project that was inspiring is their own house in Montauk, especially their garden. Hidden away in a Peter Beard-equse collage is a drawing of the garden layout that says “ethos” and “values” more than the large leather bond volume.
