the shock of the new, or old
Every year, I try to review the work coming out of Milan with a fan’s perspective. I am not there so reporting is not a fair option. For the first time in years I did not feel like I missed something, the fair just sounded sad. The reason is portrayed as an economic one and that companies can not dazzle every year. But what I am missing from the scene is the light touch youthful improvisations that usually are seen on the perimeter of the fair. I found this wildly simple knitted lamp done by Hella Jongerius in 1995. Where is the similar non-produced work? There are plenty of designers that work in a handmade, idea based condition and they could have helped the big companies move through the 21st century. Work smart not hard- oh furniture manufacturers….
