gropius 2

So Friday, we stopped off for lunch in Lincoln, Mass. to work on a upcoming project. We got to peek at the seminal Gropius House, but did not have it together to take the hour long tour, so next time. We did get to walk around the building on a beautiful end of summer day. And this act gave me some new understanding of the project.

I have lectured on this building and my favorite antidote is that Gropius made the dining room quite small because he wanted avoid entertaining Harvard architecture professors. The house seems to be intimate compared to the American house, but the modernist trick of outside spaces bleeding into inside spaces is very much at work and the scale of the house seems vast.  My surprise was how three dimensional the space felt on the outside, no flat facades here, deep terraces and cantilevers mark the landscape.
