building simultaneous

October 20, 2013

Anyone who studies color as well as space has a fantasy of living in a Josef Albers painting; imagine my surprise when I heard the Wayne McGregor’s premise for his ballet Borderlands. We got to see it danced by San Francisco Ballet last night, what a great experience! The dancing of course was wonderful, SFBallet is an excellent company and seemed actually comfortable with the otherworldly maneuvers, no ballerina suffering through the contemporary here. The set is a bit more than that. Simple things like exits and entrances are restricted to the upstage entrance and dancers actually occupy the uneasy edges of the stage. In theory, according to interviews the lighting is programmed to reproduce simultaneous contrast on the dancers bodies, I perceived a bit of that but will wait for my next time seeing the piece for more effects.
