House building

November 11, 2013

From Benjamin

The House of Christian Dior, mid-century fashion pioneer of modern luxury, is still being built. This month sees the publication of Dior Glamour, a sumptuous new book of photos taken behind the walls, during the height of the designer’s most creative period. As so many of these lush yet impromptu photographs show, this couturière’s controversial new silhouettes rightly earn him the reputation of the book’s title.
Also, on show at Paris’s Grand Palais, now through November 25th, are the works of 15 female artists, specially invited to riff on the designer’s signature perfume, “Miss Dior”, which was originally invented to accompany his debut 1947 “New Look” collection. From the colorful houndstooth carpet by Polly Apfelbaum, to the delicate glass branches by Carole Benzaken, each work takes inspiration from Dior’s distinctive motifs and runs with them in a new direction, pushing the boundaries, but somehow keeping inside… the House.
